Huge thanks goes to the Kavod Trust for initiating and supporting this incredible celebration of the exemplary teachers and school leaders of Makhanda! Barbara Proudfoot of Kavod Trust was present to be part of the glittering occasion. The Awards arose out of a visit by founder of the KAVOD Trust and generous donor, Victoria Freudenheim, to Makhanda in mid-2023. In discussions with GADRA Manager, Ashley Westaway, Victoria suggested the initiation of an annual Makhanda Teacher Awards program as an avenue to celebrate successes and to raise the status of the teaching profession. This suggestion was perfectly timed given the strides that have been made in all sectors of education across the city over the past 10 years.

Six exemplary local educators (pictured below with Barbara Proudfoot of the Kavod Trust) received personal awards of R30 000 each, while the winning Early Childhood Development Centre bagged R50 000. It was clear that all those present saw the competition as objective, reliable and authoritative. Friends and colleagues celebrated the achievements of the winners and runners-up exuberantly.
